"South West Virginia Resources", Boyd, C.R.

This is the first edition of Boyd's colorful geological map of southwestern Virginia, which also shows great detail of the railroads, wagon roads, topography via hachure, and the towns and villages in the state and part of northwestern North Carolina. Ten different geologic types are identified through color and shading including zinc, copper veins, plaster and salt deposits, oil-bearing series, carboniferous, etc. The map includes an inset showing the railway network in the greater vicinity, and is decorated by a vignette depicting Penington's Gap in Lee County, Va.

Boyd's series of important geological and mineralogical maps detailed this mineral-rich region and served as the basis for his promotion, together with Jed Hotchkiss, of the potential of the Virginia mineral belt during the mining boom of the late 19th century.
