These three maps were produced under the direction of Confederate Major General Gilmer, who was in charge of providing detailed maps for use by the Confederate Army. They were copied and issued here in James McCabe's Life and Campaigns of General Robert E. Lee. Each map shows the painstaking detail his surveyors gathered including towns, villages, wagon roads, railroads, vegetation, and individual property ownership. The list of maps include:

A. Map of the Vicinity of Richmond, and Part of the Peninsula. From Surveys Made by Order of Maj. Gen. J.F. Gilmer Chief Engineer. C.S.A. (16.6 x 27.0"). This scarce map is a smaller variant of the Campbell map (Map of the Vicinity of Richmond and Part of the Peninsula), of which the sole known example resides in the Hargett Library at the University of Georgia. The Campbell map and this Gilmer version include a backwards N and S in the north arrow. The map shows the region bounded on the north by Hanover Junction and the North Anna River, on the east by the Pamunkey River and in the south by the James River well below Richmond. The map extends with less detail to Petersburg. Some of the railroads named are the City Point, Clover Hill, and the Richmond and Petersburg. In all a remarkably detailed campaign map that is drawn on a scale of about 1.6 miles per inch.

B. Map of the Vicinity of Petersburg. Taken from Surveys Made by Order of Maj. Gen. J.F. Gilmer, Chief Engineer, C.S.A. (12.1 x 18.1"). This map covers an area 15 x 22 miles wide. Petersburg is located along the Appomattox River, and was the scene of the last of the great battles of the Civil War.

C. Map of the Country Between Richmond and Petersburg Drawn from Surveys Made by Order of Maj. Gen. J.F. Gilmer Chief Engineer C.S.A. (12.4 x 18.3"). Covering an area 22 x 16 miles, the map depicts Richmond and Manchester at top with Petersburg at bottom. Rail lines lead from Petersburg to City Point at the confluence of the Appomattox and James Rivers.
