A. Map Showing the Distribution of the Tribes of Alaska and Adjoining Territory Compiled from the Latest Authorities, dated 1875 (31.0 x 22.1"). This large and colorful ethnologic map focuses on the Native American tribes of Alaska, the Siberian Peninsula, and part of today's Yukon Territory. Color overprinting and line locate the territories of the six tribal groups in Alaska, and part of British Columbia: Tinneh Indians; Innuit tribes; Aleuts; Asia Chukhis American Tlinkets; Nasse and Chimsyan Indians; and Haida or Kygahni. Individual tribes are named with the groups. Compiled by W.H. Dall, U.S. Coast Survey with the geographical data brought up to November 1875. Includes a large inset at upper right extending to the Aleutian Islands. Condition: Issued folding with light toning and color offsetting. A fold separation along the left fold has been closed on verso with archival tape. (B+)

B. Map Showing the Distribution of the Indian Tribes of Washington Territory Compiled from the Latest Authorities..., dated 1876 (15.4 x 19.9"). This map is a detailed examination of the Indian tribes west of the Cascades. A legend provides the key to the coloring of the tribes. It identifies the tribes of Tsihali-Sel and Niskwalli-Sel (from the Selish Family), Tsinuk (Tsinuk Family), Klikatat (Sahaptin Family), Makah (Nutka Family), and the Owillapsh Tribe of the Tinneh Family. A note states that the official spelling of the tribal names are reduced to their phonetic value. Locates the Niskwalli, Swiwamish, Muckleshoot, Chelalis, and Shoalwater Indian Reservations to name a few. The only railroad exists between Kalama and Tacoma. Condition: Faint color offsetting, otherwise fine. (A)

The maps are housed in the rear pocket of the first volume of Contributions to North American Ethnology which includes Dall's Tribes of the Extreme Northwest (156 pages) and George Gibb's Tribes of Western Washington and Northwestern Oregon (205 pages). Quarto, hardbound in brown cloth with gilt tile on spine.
