This is one of several similar maps illustrating the growing French/British conflict in North America, published in the May 1755 issue of Scots Magazine. It was issued just before the French and Indian War was officially declared and depicts, by hachure, the French encroachment in the disputed territory west of the Allegheny Mountains. The British colonies south of the Bounds of Virginia and New England 1609 extend to the western-most edge of the map, which is about the 100th Meridian. Earl Granville's Property in North Carolina also stretches to the western-most edge of the map. Next to the decorative title cartouche is a block of text detailing the English claims in North America.
