An uncommon, large and very detailed German map issued in the aftermath of the Civil War. It covers the United States with parts of Canada and Mexico. The states and territories are shown with superb detail of railroads, rivers, topography, and roads. A publication date around 1869 seems likely, given the appearance of Wyoming Territory, which was established in 1868. In addition to Wyoming, several territories are delineated in the west: Washington, Idaho, Montana, Dacota, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. According to the color-coding, Nevada and Nebraska are still territories too, despite being states by the time the map was published. In Nevada there is a note that reads Wustenbecken von Californien (referring to the Great Basin). The relatively new state of West Virginia (established 1863) is notably absent. A color key at right shows the states and territories divided into several regions, and another key at bottom left identifies various abbreviations used on the map. Edited and drawn by Heinrich C. Kiepert, engraved by C. Poppey Jr.
