This wall map chronicles the aviation career of Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902-74), who is best known for his prize-winning transatlantic flight from Long Island, New York to Paris France, in his plane known as the Spirit of St. Louis. This map focuses on North America and the North Atlantic Ocean, outlining Lindbergh's routes over land throughout North America (extending into northern South America) and across the Atlantic, with a color-coded legend in Africa identifying each flight. Panels of text describe the routes and other historical details of his various flights, including his first flights, national tour, San Diego to New York flight, Transatlantic flight, and his flight through Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The elaborate title cartouche features a portrait of Lindbergh and his four medals hanging below the Great Seal of the United States. Several vignettes fill the blank ocean spaces, including the ships of Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and the U.S. Cruiser that transported Lindbergh back to the U.S. after his transatlantic flight. Created by Ernest Clegg and published by the John Day Company in New York. This map was issued both folding and on rollers.
