These three maps by Captain C.S. Riche were included in a proposal to connect the San Bernard and Brazos rivers as part of a plan by the Army Engineers to expand the navigation of Texas rivers around 1900.

A. Map Showing Relative Geographical Position of San Bernard River & Other Waterways Estimates for Whose Improvement for a Light Draft Navigation Have Been Submitted to Congress, from H Doc 446 56 1, dated 1899, printed color (19.9 x 27.6"). This map covers eastern Texas from Sabine Pass south to Brownsville and inland to Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. It is color-coded to indicate those channels that are navigable by light craft (blue) and those channels that are not (red).

B. San Bernard River, Texas, Showing Possible Connection with Brazos River and Part of Possible Connection with Matagorda Bay for a Light Draft Navigation, from H Doc 446 56 1, dated 1899, black & white (54.4 x 14.5"). Shows an approximate 14 mile stretch from Quintana to Cedar Lake with a possible connection to Matagorda Bay through a complicated series of lakes, creeks, and bayous.

C. Brazos River, Texas from the Mouth to Waco Showing Lock Sites and Location of Profiles Across River Bottom, from H Doc 450 56 2, dated 1900, printed color (14.5 x 28.0"). Depicts central Texas from Waco to the Gulf of Mexico. Proposed lock sites are shown in red overprinting. The map also shows good detail of the railroad network in the vicinity.
