This map of Florida shows towns, roads, railroads, canals, major rivers, and lakes. There are references to forts, battlefields, and routes used by the Army during the Seminole War. There are also three inset maps detailing Pensacola, Tallahassee, and St. Augustine. Water routes from St. Augustine and Pensacola to various ports are described above and below the map. Although copyrighted 1839, the map reflects the configuration of counties circa 1842 with the recent organization of Calhoun and Santa Rosa counties, yet prior to the creation of Hernando and Wakulla Counties in 1843. Mosquito County is here called Leigh Read and encompasses nearly all of central Florida. The name Leigh Read County had come into de facto use in honor of General and Legislator Leigh Read following his assassination. A bill was passed by the Florida Territorial Council in 1842 to officially change the name from Mosquito to Leigh Read County, but for some mysterious reason the law never appeared on the books.
