This large map on two sheets of the British Isles extends to show the North Sea and part of northwestern Europe, including the Low Countries and parts of Norway, Denmark, Germany, and France. The map gives extensive detail both on land and at sea. Indeed the drape-style cartouche at bottom right advertises the use of the map for both geographical and hydrographical purposes. The map is handsomely embellished with a large wind rose, a distance scale cartouche featuring a seaman smoking a pipe, and a large title cartouche that continues the nautical theme with sea horses, mer-men and fishing nets. The title dedicates the map to King George I, although the coat of arms is that of William III. The map was created by Charles Inselin and published by Bernard-Jean-Hyacinth Jaillot, the son of Alexis-Hubert Jaillot. Some examples of this map have been found in Jaillot's later atlases and composite atlases, although due to its size it was also separately issued.

References: Shirley (BI to 1750) Inselin I.

Condition: B

A nice impression on watermarked paper with light soiling. There are professional repairs to a number of separations and small holes along the folds, which have since been flattened, with a small amount of image replaced in facsimile. There are additional professional repairs to chips and tears along the edges of the sheets. Despite these imperfections, the map presents itself very well.

Estimate: $1,000 - $1,300
