A nice pair of maps showing the early United States with its western limits along the Mississippi River. The first map shows the original thirteen states to the east of the Alleghenies with Indian tribes occupying the lands to the west. The second map adds the new states of Vermont (1791) and Kentucky (1792), with Tennessee also identified in the rapidly evolving western frontier. The fictitious islands of Phillipeaux and Pontchartrain in Lake Superior that are present on the Conder map do not appear in the later Russell map.

A. The United States of America, Drawn from the Latest Authorities, by Thomas Conder, circa 1790 (8.9 x 7.5"). Condition: A dark impression on a clean sheet. (A)

B. States of America, from the Best Authorities, by John Russell, circa 1795 (9.2 x 7.6"). Condition: Light offsetting. (B+)
