A. Landmarks of Mapmaking - An Illustrated Survey of Maps and Mapmakers, by Tooley and Bricker, published 1976 (16.0 x 11.0"). Charles Bicker wrote this beautifully produced and well-illustrated cartographic reference. It covers the exploration and mapping of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia. The preface is by Gerald Roe Crone, and the maps were chosen by R. V. Tooley. Comprised of 276 pp., over 350 illustrations, including maps, portraits, title pages, and reproductions from early sources, 14 color folding maps, other color illustrations, bibliography, and index. Published by Wordsworth Editions Ltd. Folio, hardbound in linen cloth, gilt title on the spine, and dust jacket. Condition: Contents very good with minor creasing along the edges of some of the pages and a few minor spots in the text. There is light shelf wear along the edges of the covers, and the dust jacket has been price clipped with some small chips and tears and light sunning. (B+)

B. Maps: Finding Our Place in the World, by James R. Akerman and Robert W. Karrow Jr., published 2007 (8.9 x 11.4"). Maps: Finding Our Place in the World is a companion volume to the exhibition of the same name mounted by the Field Museum in collaboration with the Newberry Library. The exhibition kicked off in Chicago in 2007 and was called "the most ambitious exhibition on the history of maps ever mounted in North America." The accompanying book features seven in-depth essays on the history of cartography from some of the world's most renowned map experts. 186 color illustrations appear throughout the text. Hardbound in green cloth with an illustrated dust jacket. 400 pp. Condition: Like new. (A+)
