This 694 page report covers the first three years of Signal Service operations (1881-83) at Point Barrow, Alaska under the command of First Lieutenant P.H. Ray. The volume is divided into seven sections with particular emphasis on meteorology, magnetism, ethnology, and natural history. The report is illustrated by 16 plates including 10 photogravures of natives/scenery, 2 colored bird plates, and a colored frontispiece of the signal station. Also includes the Map of Exploration in North Western Alaska... (15.0 x 10.6") that covers the region from Cape Lisburne to Point Barrow and east to the Meade River Mountains in the interior. Quarto, hardbound in brown cloth with gilt title on spine.

Condition: B+

Map, plates and text are very good with pleasant light toning. Title page and one plate have separated from the text block. Binding is somewhat loose and the hinges are starting. Extremities have light wear with bumped edges. Ex-library bookplate on front pastedown.
