This great pre-Mexican War map shows Mexico in control of the Southwest and California. The Republic of Texas is shown in its long stove-pipe configuration. Above Texas is a huge unnamed region stretching to Canada and bounded to the east and west by the territories of Oregon and Iowa. Iowa Territory is in its largest configuration, and Oregon Country takes in the entire Northwest and extends well into Canada. Features an inset map of Great Britain drawn on the same scale to give the British viewer a perspective on the enormity of the United States. James Wyld was the successor to William Faden.

The map is still bound into the front of George Putnam's American Facts. 292 pages with four portraits. Hardbound in green cloth over stiff, tan paper boards.

References: Howes #P658.

Condition: B

The map has light offsetting, several pencil notations in the image, and a 4" binding tear at left that has been repaired on verso with old paper. Several other minor fold separations mostly in the blank margins have also been closed on verso with old paper. Text is lightly toned and the binding is loose with the last few signatures separated from the block. Covers are moderately worn and nearly detached.
