This uncommon small map of the United States comes from Felice Potel's Italian translation of the Monin and Fremin atlas of 1837. It names several states and territories, towns and cities, and Indian lands. There is nice topographical detail as well. Santa Fe, Monterey, San Diego, Astoria, and San Antonio are among the few cities identified in the west. Although there were 26 states at the time Monin and Fremin's atlas was published, the accompanying page of Italian text claims there are only 24. Arkansas (founded in 1837) is named, but Michigan (founded the same year) is not. The text notes that the population of the United States is 11,600,000.
