"Histoire Generale des Voyages, ou Nouvelle Collection de Toutes les Relations de Voyages ... Tome Dixieme", Prevost, Anton Francois

This is a nice example of volume ten of Prevost's history of voyages published in 1752, with maps by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. The volume covers India and Japan and includes 10 maps and plans and 14 additional plates including:

Carte de l'Indoustan (12.8 x 9.0").

Suite de la Carte de l'Indoustan... (9.6 x 8.7"). Condition: Moderate offsetting from opposing title page.

Carte de l"Archipel de St. Lazare ou les Isles Marianes... (single paoe).

[First Sheet] Carte des Isles Philippines (6.2 x 8.3") and [Second Sheet] Carte des Isles Philippines ... (11.7 x 8.1"). A fine pair of maps covering the Philippines, both with lovely rococo-style title cartouches. The first map depicts the northern islands of the Philippine archipelago, including Luzon and Mindoro. The notable city of Manila is located as well. The map is filled with nice detail throughout. The second is a double page chart which is focused on the southern islands including Mindanao, Palawan, Panay, and part of Borneo. Condition: Light offsetting.

Carte de l'Isle Celebes ou Macassar... (single page).

Carte de l'Empire du Japon... (12.2 x 8.5"). This is a reduced version of Bellin's influential map made for Jesuit Father Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix's Histoire du Japon. Japan is presented basically on the Kaempfer/Scheuchzer model with several corrections to the coastlines, and individual provinces are delineated via engraved line. The Mer de Coree is shown to the west.

Plan de Jedo... (single page).

Plan du Port de la Ville de Nangasaki (13.2 x 7.3"). Bellin's smaller version of this great plan of Nagasaki. The map is oriented to the southwest with a bold compass rose. The map locates the principal points of interest and major buildings. The Desima is central to the map. This artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki was where the VOC (Dutch East India Company) were allowed to trade with the representatives of the Shogun in Edo. Locates a large Temple complex at the end of the bay. The rococo-style title cartouche incorporates the key to locations.

Published by Didot, the book is in full leather with gilt decoration on front and back cover. Quarto, 701 pages.

The maps and plates are generally very good to near fine with occasional offsetting. Text is clean and bright with occasional faint spots of foxing. Spine is chipped at head and tail and there is light external wear. See description for additional detail on maps.
