This large-scale, bird's-eye plan of the city of Ostend provides and excellent view of the city's fortification and strategic position on the North Sea coast. Thirty-four sites and facilities are numbered or lettered and identified both in German and in Latin in the two legends. At bottom is a coast view of Ostend flanked by allegorical scenes; Mars, god of war, with a military encampment at left and Neptune and Mercury with ship builders at the right.
