This handsome engraving of a battle at Panama City was created for an early English edition of Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin's History of the Bucaniers of America, a fascinating work describing the voyages and adventures of numerous buccaneers who sailed throughout the New World. Exquemelin's work was first published in Dutch in 1678 and was very popular, appearing in nearly every European language within ten years of its publication, and continued to be issued for nearly 100 years. The view shows a battle between privateers, led by Henry Morgan, and Spaniards who held claim to Panama City. Morgan attacked the town of Panama in January 1671, and although he succeeded in capturing the town, the Spaniards burnt the city to the ground before retreating in order to prevent the privateers from benefiting from the attack.
