"A Perspective View of Pensacola...", Hinton, John

This early view of Pensacola was issued after a hurricane wiped out the settlement on Santa Rosa Island (1754), and the town was forced to move onto the mainland. Published at the conclusion of the French & Indian War, the British divided Florida between East & West, and Pensacola became the capital of West Florida. At this point in time, Pensacola was a barely more than a garrison town and only a few buildings are identified including a fort, church, Governor's House, Commandants House, and a well. Several small boats fill the Pensacola Bay in the foreground. The view was published in the January 1764 edition of Universal Magazine.
