This boldly colored map was published in William Barton Rogers' Geology of the Virginias [1884], and edited by his wife Emma Rogers. Jedediah Hotchkiss first published this map for Virginia: A Geographical and Political Summary... in 1876, and he would continue to publish iterations of the map over the next 10 years, but the geology was all based upon Roger's work from the 1830s. Cartographically, the map is color-coded to show 11 different geological types across the two states, and red lines indicate geologic cross sections. In addition to the geology, the map shows railroads, canals, and county seats. Published by Hotchkiss in Staunton and lithographed by Julies Bien.
