Blunt's Coast Pilot series was a detailed guide to harbors, capes and headlands on the east coasts of North and South America and included information on winds, currents, and tides as well as latitudes and longitudes. This is a complete example of the sixth edition with 15 maps, 5 of which are folding. The sailing charts include: Boston Harbor, New York Harbor, Long Island Sound, Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, Isle of Sable, Portland Harbor, Portsmouth Harbor, Newburyport Harbor, Annis Squam Harbor, Cape Poge, Newport Harbor, Outer Banks, North Carolina, Charleston Harbor, and Vera Cruz, Mexico. The American Coast Pilot was published in 21 editions between 1796 and 1861, until it was replaced by federally-funded charts produced by the US Coast Survey. 389 pp. Professionally rebound in paper-covered boards with a printed paper title label on spine.

Condition: B

The maps range in condition from satisfactory to very good, with light toning, soiling, offsetting, and occasional foxing. The folding maps show more wear and have been professionally backed with old paper to provide support and repair fold separations and short tears. The map of Long Island Sound was clearly heavily used by a previous owner, with a grid added to the eastern half of the map in pencil. The binding is tight and the new covers are in excellent condition. A nicely preserved example of a guidebook that was intended for heavy use.
