This detailed hydrographic chart depicts the Juan de Fuca and Georgia Straits that intersect at the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island. The chart is approximately centered on the San Juan Islands, the location of the infamous "Pig War" of 1859, a conflict between the United States and Great Britain that arose from a dispute over the shooting of a free range pig and escalated into a standoff of 5 British warships with 2,140 men against 461 American troops. The chart gives excellent detail of depth soundings, lighthouses, and navigational notes, with topographical detail shown along the coastlines. The chart extends north to the city of Vancouver and includes several coastal profile views.
