"Carte de l'Extreme-Orient et du Theatre de la Guerre Russo-Japonaise", Anon.

This interesting piece of ephemera depicts the east coast of Asia during the Russo-Japanese War, and is augmented by a large inset of the Korean peninsula and a small eastern hemisphere map. The map emphasizes strategic features including roads, railroads, underground cables, and place names highlighted in red overprinting.

The Russo-Japanese War was essentially fought over Russia's encroachment on the warm water ports of the Pacific Ocean (Korea and China), as their primary port (Vladivostok) was only accessible during the summer months. The relatively short battle was won by the Japanese and shifted the balance of power in the region.
