This map of Europe depicts the political boundaries just prior to the outbreak of the French Revolution. France encompasses Belgium and Luxembourg, encompassing nearly all the land west and south of the Rhine River. Central Europe is dominated by Germany and Hungary and the Balkans are under control of Turkey. Although the full extend of the Kingdom of Poland is outlined in pink, the partitions of 1772 are highlighted in various colors. The map is adorned with a decorative title cartouche featuring the female personification of Europe and cherubs symbolizing science, art and literature. Engraved by W. Palmer.
