"Acores Insulae", Ortelius, Abraham

A beautifully engraved chart of the Azores based on Luis Teixeira's cartographic work with three ornate title cartouches and a title banner at top center. The sea is fully engraved in stipple and features a sea monster and sailing ships. Latin text on verso, published in 1592.

Full original color on paper with Ortelius' common crossed arrows watermark. There are a few small worm holes in the image that have been professionally infilled, a crease adjacent to the centerfold, and a hint of toning along the centerfold. A professionally repaired centerfold separation is confined to the bottom blank margin, and faint damp stains along the edges of the sheet are well away from image.
