This is the first edition of this fascinating book on the naming of America, the "growth of the cosmography of the New World," and the explorations of Vespucci and Columbus. It was written by John Boyd Thacher (1847-1909), who in addition to being an author of several books was a noted book collector, manufacturer, mayor of Albany, and New York state senator. The book includes facsimiles of 14 original maps (several folding), plates, drawings, and ornate capitals. #129 of 250 copies. 270 pp. with some illustrations on additional unnumbered pages in the back. Hardbound in maroon cloth with a vellum spine with gilt titles. Top edge gilt.

Contents good with light toning along the edges of some of the sheets and some minor soiling. There is light soiling and wear to the covers and spine.
