A scarce map of Panama from the buccaneer and surgeon, Alexander Oliver Esquemeling (1645-1707). Esquemeling accompanied the famous Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan on his escapades though the Caribbean, and was a first-hand participant in the raids on cities, such as the raid on Panama in 1667. His work was first published in Dutch in 1678 and was very popular, appearing in nearly every European language within ten years of its publication, and continued to be issued for nearly 100 years. This view illustrates the land with pictorial topography with north oriented to the bottom. Panama City appears at top, with several other smaller cities shown. There are tiny illustrations of soldiers engaged in battle, a round-up of bulls, and pirate ships in the seas.
