A. America - Early Maps of the New World, by Hans Wolff, published 1992 (11.8 x 11.1"). This is a beautifully illustrated scholarly discussion of early maps that show the New World. Many aspects of geography and cartography and how they evolved are discussed. Edited by Hans Wolff, on behalf of the Bavarian State Library. 90 splendid illustrations in color and 92 in duotone. First English edition. 192 pp. Hardbound in blue cloth with dust jacket. Condition: Contents and covers like new with just a negligible amount of wear to the dust jacket.

B. The Mapping of New Spain - Indigenous Cartography and the Maps of the Relaciones Geograficas, by Barbara E. Mundy, published 1996 (8.9 x 9.6"). Spain launched a vast project to learn about its territories in the New World in the years 1578 - 1584. The survey, known as the Relaciones Geográficas, collected local maps and gathered descriptions of local resources, history, and geography. The result was the most complete contemporary record of 16th century Mexico. The sixty-nine manuscript maps highlight the gulf between colonial and indigenous conceptions of Mexico. Mundy explores the complex cultural negotiations that colonists and indigenes undertook in mapping the colony and traces the gradual reshaping of indigene world views in the wake of colonization. Eight color plates and numerous b/w illustrations. A remarkable book. Hardbound with a dust jacket protected by Mylar. 281 pp. Condition: A touch of soiling/foxing along the sheets' top edges, otherwise fine.
