This fascinating map appears to be incomplete. Although the focus of the map is the continent of Africa, the coastlines of Brazil, Spain, Arabia, and Persia are shown with numerous place names. However in the eastern Mediterranean, the coastline suddenly disappears just north of Syria, and numerous islands (including Sicily, Cyprus, and the Greek Islands) and rhumb lines are curiously missing. The cartography within Africa is complete and is based on Jaillot's map of 1674, which in turn was based on Sanson's second map of Africa from 1668. The map presents the standard Ptolemaic description of the source of the Nile, however, Mortier presents an updated depiction of the rivers south of these Ptolemaic lakes with the omission of the Zambere River. Two St. Helena islands are still shown - a common error in maps from this period. Just below Brazil, the distance scale is handsomely adorned with a native American and a phoenix.
