This is the 25th volume of Petermann's Mittheilungen for the year 1879. The 40-page magazine features an article by Von G. Gerland entitled "Die Indienner Californiens" and includes the highly detailed Karte zur Ubersicht der Verbreitung der Indianer-Stamme in Californien (9.8 x 12.3"). This map of the western United States is engraved with the typical crisp and precise German style leaving almost no blank spaces. On top of the base map are hand colored regions to identify various Indian tribes including the Modoc, Pomo, Yokut and Shoshone. A second map entitled Ubersichtskarte von dem Verbreitungscebiet des Schwarzen Todes showing the progression of the black plague in Europe from 1346-1696 (18 x 10.8") is also included in the issue.

Dr. Augustus Herman Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen was the oldest German trade magazine dedicated to geography. First published in 1855, the magazine covered many of the important discoveries of the 19th and 20th century until its end in 1937. Published by Justus Perthes in Gotha.
