This German map of Newfoundland is attributed to Bellin and gives excellent detail along the coasts. A note at the center of the island indicates that the courses of the rivers within Newfoundland are completely unknown. This map was published in Raspe's Schau Platz des Gegenwaertigen Kriegs, which contained over 150 maps and battle plans relating to the world-wide theater of the Seven Years' War. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) gave the French in-season fishing rights along the northeastern shore of Newfoundland between Point Riche and Cape Bonavista in exchange for British ownership of the island. After the Treaty of Paris (1763) the French were granted the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon (shown in pink on the map) in compensation for the loss of Cape Breton. Maps by Raspe are uncommon and rarely found on the market.
