This volume, published by Victor Dalmont, contains two important geological papers of North American interest by Jules Marcou and Louis-Edouard Rivot, both of which are accompanied by large maps. Marcou's Carte Geologique des Etats-Unis et des Provinces Anglaises de l'Amerique du Nord (22.5 x 13.3”) is one of the first geological maps to cover the entire United States from the Atlantic to Pacific. On the same sheet at top is a geological profile extending from Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Los Angeles, California, along Lt. Whipple's expedition route made during the Pacific Railroad survey. Rivot's geological maps focus on the Lake Superior region including Carte Geologique du Lac Superieur, Etat de Michigan (18.0 x 11.8”) and Cartes de L'Ile Royale de la Pointe de Keweenaw et de L'Ontonagon (24.5 x 14.2”), both of which are based on the work of Foster and Whitney. A fourth geological map of the anthracite coal basin near the Drac River in France by M. E. Rogers (15 x 7.7”) is also present. 644 pages with 4 folding maps and 8 other plates. Hardbound in quarter leather over speckled paper boards.
