A. A New and Accurate Map of North America Drawn & Engrav'd from the Best Authorities, by John Gibson, from The Universal Gazetteer, circa 1760 (7.6 x 5.6"). This small but detailed map of North America spans from the upper expanses of Canada to the northern tip of South America, and east to include Britain. The colonies are identified, as is French Louisiana, New Mexico, and California. Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia extend west to the Mississippi River. West of the Mississippi, only two cities appear: Senis in Texas and Sta. Fee. The land north of Baja California is named New Albion, and the mythical land of Quivira is shown in the west. The northwest frontier of the continent is labeled Parts Undiscovered. Condition: Issued folding with a printer's crease. (A) Reference: McCorkle (18th C. Geography Books) #420.4.

B. North America, by Anonymous, circa 1800 (7.9 x 9.7"). This elegantly engraved map of North America extends to show Iceland, the northwest portion of South America, and the part of Asia just across the Bering Strait. The states are identified within the United States, and the Louisiana Territory, Texas, and New Mexico are located as well. Florida is divided into East and West Florida. There is some topographical detail, including the Stony Mountains, and several Indian tribes are named. The course of the Missouri River becomes conjectural as it approaches the Rockies. Captain Cook's discoveries in the northwestern portion of the continent are documented. Condition: Issued folding with minor toning, faint offsetting from an opposing page of text, and a few small edge tears that have been closed with archival materials. (B+)
