This double-hemisphere world map divides the societies of the world in the following categories: barbarous, half civilized, civilized, and enlightened. It also identifies the major religions of each region of the world, which it lists as Protestant, Roman Catholic, Greek Church, Mahometanism, and Paganism, with Protestant missionary stations located as well. A series of abbreviations explained in a key at bottom indicate population, square mileage, ethnicity, and type of government. The discoveries and routes of various explorers are noted, including Captains Cook, Wilkes, and Ross. Antarctica is just beginning to take shape, with fragments of coastline labeled Victoria Land, Enderby Land, and Antarctic Continent shown. Texas appears as an independent republic-- more specifically an enlightened, Protestant republic. The western parts of the United States are labeled barbarous. A large portion of southern Africa is unexplored, and the Mountains of the Moon are located. Beneath the map is a smaller double-hemisphere world map on a polar projection, and an inset at bottom right zooms in on Central Europe. Engraved by Stiles, Sherman & Smith.
