This lovely view shows Boston from Castle William across the Charles River. The Boston Common, the State House, and numerous steeples can be seen in the city. The American flag is shown flying from Castle William in the foreground, now known as Fort Independence. This engraving is derived from Governor Thomas Pownall's A View of the City of Boston the Capital of New England, circa 1760. Engraved by Spirito Batelli and published by Giulio Ferrario in his multi-volume work "Ancient and Modern Costumes: The history of the government, the militia, the religion, the arts and sciences, and the customs of all people ancient and modern," which was published between 1816 and 1827.
