This uncommon advertisement for the Northern Pacific Railroad was created to generate capital to help cover the incredible cost associated with the construction of a transcontinental railroad linking the upper Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. The advertising leads with the "New 7-30 Gold Loan" (meaning a return of 7.3%), and the text compares this to a U.S. bond that only returns 5.2%. It is hard to argue with "Safe! Profitable! Permanent!". The map on verso shows the northern portion of the country, displaying the route and connecting lines. Full sheet measures 10 x 17".
