A. Lieut. Wheeler's Expedition in California, Nevada, Arizona, 1875, by Justus Perthes, from Petermann's Geographische Mitteilungen, dated 1876, hand color (12.1 x 10.1"). The map centers on the Mojave Desert and shows the areas measured by Lieutenants Birnie, Wheeler, and Whipple, as well as the route of Lieutenant Bergland's Division through the desert. Filled with detail in the typical German style. Condition: Original color on a bright sheet with faint offsetting.

B. Progress Map of the U.S. Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian..., by U.S. Geographical Survey, dated 1882, printed color (22.4 x 17.5"). A remarkable and attractive map that reflects the survey efforts in the West, including the survey seasons of 1869, and 1871 through 1879. It is a detailed representation of the various routes of western expeditions and the important surveys of King (40th parallel), Wheeler, Powell and Hayden. Among the details are the locations of occupied and abandoned posts, astronomical stations, signal service stations, telegraphic lines, and the routes of cattle droves and trains. The progress maps are among the most interesting, informative and useful maps of the West. Condition: Issued folding with faint color offsetting, a binding trim at left, and a tiny binding tear that just passes the neatline.
