This book, published by Tanner & Disturnell, examines the extent of canals and railroads in the young United States. The text is organized by state and includes three folding maps: Map of the Canals & Railroads of the United States (22.7 x 17.5"), A New Map of New York... (12.0 x 10.7"), and A New Map of Pennsylvania... (12.5 x 10.5"). Each map depicts the railroads and canals in red and blue hand coloring and are derived from maps in Tanner's Universal Atlas. The volume includes two additional plates showing profiles of various canals and a 4-page advertisement listing other works available for sale by Tanner & Disturnell. 272 pp., rebound in brown faux-leather with gilt stamped spine.

References: Howes #T26.

Condition: B+

Maps are good to very good with very faint offsetting. The large map of the United States has a small area of loss along one fold (no image loss) due to wormholes, and the map of New York has a few old tape repairs confined to the blank margins. Text is very good and new binding is flawless.
