This fine reproduction of the Bernardus Sylvanus' edition of Ptolemy's Geographia (published in 1511) is from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Series of Atlases in Facsimile Fifth Series - Volume I. With this work, Sylvanus tried to reconcile Ptolemy's outdated but sacrosanct innovations with the latest cartographic information. He was the only editor of Ptolemy to redraw his maps. More than 25 maps are included, printed in red and black as they were in 1511, when Sylvanus' atlas was the first to use two-color woodblock printing. The final map is Sylvanus' important cordiform world map, one of the first maps to depict the newly discovered Americas. Features a 6 page introduction by R.A. Skelton that provides invaluable context. Published in Amsterdam by Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd. Hardbound in blue cloth with gilt insignia on front cover and title on spine, with a beige dust jacket protected by mylar.
