Handsome and uncommon map of the southern tip of India and a part of Sri Lanka. There are many place names noted including Calcutta (Calichut), Goa, and Cananor. The interior is filled with exotic animals, including elephants and ostriches. A pair of compass roses adorn the sea, and it is teeming with ships of many kinds. The decorative cartouches for the title and scale of miles are surrounded with local people and goods.

This map is based on Johann Nieuhoff's journey to India. Nieuhoff was the official chronicler & draughtsman for the first embassy to China by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), then at the height of its power. After leaving China, Nieuhoff was offered a position in Ceylon, where he was stationed from 1663 to 1667. Nieuhoff's journals of his experiences in the Orient were later published by Jacob van Meurs.
