This handsome map of Newfoundland is a reduced version of Coronelli's larger map of the Maritimes, which itself was based on Nolin's Partie Orientale du Canada, first published in 1689. The map extends to include Anticosti Island, the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, and several small islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The interior of Newfoundland is filled with mountain ranges, while numerous place names fill the coastline. This map was typically printed on a sheet with three additional small maps of Bermuda, Jan Mayen Island, and the mythical island of Frisland. The title credits the discovery of the island to explorer John Cabot and his son Sebastian in 1596.

Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti.
