This attractive quarto atlas contains 35 maps including 2 of the world, 21 related to Europe, 5 of the continents, 2 of the United States, and maps of New Zealand, India and China. The maps are tipped into the atlas with blank versos. Cartographically, the map of the United States shows a little unfinished business in the west with the northwest corner of Wyoming occupying a portion of present-day Idaho, and Arizona is still in control of the southern tip of Nevada. The Central Pacific Railroad is shown going to the Pacific and an erroneous mountain range is shown going east-to-west in southern Nevada and Utah. Elsewhere, the map of Asia depicts the Great Wall of China and the map of Australia shows the Northern Territory also labeled as Alexandra Land. Includes a 48-page index identifying the latitude and longitude of 30,000 locations. Hardbound in maroon full leather with gilt embossing, marbled endpapers and all edges gilt.
