This rare bird's-eye view depicts the fortified city of Koblenz. The city straddles the Rhine River, and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is shown on a mountain top, overlooking the city. In the foreground are a couple harvesting grapes, and a man leading a horse and two cows, pulling a cart full of wooden barrels. Two putti hold blank banners above the city. Below the view is a blank coat of arms flanked by Latin and German text describing the city.
Joseph Friedrich Leopold was a well-known and respected engraver in Augsburg known for his views of cities. He was among a circle of famous engravers including Friedrich Bernhard Werner, Martin Engelbrecht and Johann Georg Ringlin.
