This uncommon and fascinating double-hemisphere world map was engraved by James Gwin. It was likely based on Herman Moll's A Map of the World on Wch. is Delineated the Voyages of Robinson Curso and published either in an edition of Daniel Defoe's groundbreaking novel or in the second edition of James Bentley Gordon's Terraquea or a New System of Geography.... A fictitious R. Cruso's I. is located off the coast of present-day Venezuela, and the character's route (based on Dampier's travels) is traced. California appears as an island, and there is a large lake on the nearby northwest coast. Northwestern North America is left unengraved, with no conjectural features. The only names that appear in the present-day United States are Florida, the Mississippi River, Chesapeake Bay, Boston, and Brit. Plantation, which runs down the eastern coast. New Guinea and Australia are connected and depicted in vague, incomplete configurations. Only a sliver of coastline represents New Zealand. In Asia Yedso is depicted attached to Japan.
