This interesting sheet shows a bird's-eye view of the fortified town of Phillippsburg on the Rhine and its surroundings. The map illustrates the contemporary French siege of the fortress that occurred as part of the War of the Polish Succession in the summer of 1734. A key in the bottom left corner identifies the batteries, stores, and other military locations and apparatus belonging to both the French attackers and the German defenders. The topography of the nearby countryside is captured in good detail, and various satellite towns are located. A decorative title cartouche adorns the upper right corner and features war iconography.
