"Outline of the Geology of the Globe", Hitchcock, Edward

Drawn on Mercator's Projection, this thematic map depicts the entire world with a separate hemisphere of the "Supposed Antarctic Continent" that locates Wilke's Land, South Victoria, Enderby Land and Cook's sighting of 1774. This map uses six different colors to identify various geologic types. Along the bottom are the comparative heights of mountains and volcanoes aligned with the position on the map. Hitchcock was an eminent professor of chemistry and natural history at Amherst College and was selected in 1830 to conduct a general survey of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and published the first major American geological work.

Issued folding with a binding trim at right and an associated binding tear that extends 3.5" into the image closed on verso with archival material. A few short separations have been closed on verso with archival tape and there is light toning primarily along the folds.
