This group of maps show the planned improvements to the canal that bypassed the Falls of the Ohio River between Louisville and Portland, Kentucky. The canal was originally constructed in 1830 by the Louisville and Portland Canal Company, but the government eventually acquired it and made several improvements to it. The establishment of the canal was quite significant as the Falls was the only obstacle on the Ohio River from its source in Pennsylvania all the way to the Mississippi River.
