This is volume 15 from the tenth census and is focused on the mining industry within the United States. There are several reports within the volume by the likes of Frederick Prime, Raphael Pumpelly and Charles Eldridge with a focus on coal deposits in the Pacific Northwest. With the railroads expanding both west and north, understanding the nature and proximity of mineral deposits was critical for continued development. The 423 pages of text is filled with maps, profiles and illustrative plates along with five folding maps at back focused on the geology of central Montana entitled Geological Map of the Cretacous Bituminous Coal Region of Central Montana. The five sheets that comprise this map are the Crazy Mountain Sheet; Judith River Basin, Southern Sheet; Judith River Basin, Northern Sheet; Upper Missouri River Basin, Northern Sheet; and Upper Missouri River Basin, Southern Sheet. Quarto, hardbound, quarter calf with tips over marbled paper boards.
