This fascinating engraving shows Captain Cook's 1774 landing on the island of Tanna in the South Pacific. Cook waves a palm leaf to indicate to hostile natives that he means well, even though his ship appears to be firing a cannon in the background in an attempt to frighten them off. Cook's second voyage spanned from 1772 to 1775, and took him through several South Pacific islands as he searched for Terra Australis. From a Dutch edition of Cook's Voyages.
