Deftly engraved 18th century map of western Africa from Barbary, Nigeria, and Guinea to below the equator. There is a mass of geographic detail and notations in the interior with information on the rivers and lakes. Numerous tent encampments are depicted throughout the Sahara Desert. This map first appeared in Delisle's Atlas de Geographie (1700-1712) and was here re-issued by Jan Elwe with his imprint at bottom.

References: cf. Norwich #317.

Condition: B+

On bluish watermarked paper with an archivally repaired centerfold separation that enters about 1/2" into the image at bottom, some minor toning along the centerfold, and a chip in the bottom right corner outside the neatline. There is a 1" tear in image and two tears in blank margins that have been professionally repaired with old paper on verso. The impression in the map is very nice, but a bit weak around the map borders.

Estimate: $275 - $350
