This important report by Captain John Mullan describes the construction of a road from Walla Walla to Fort Benton. While the road was intended for the military, its importance was as an emigrant route to the Northwest and would also serve as the route for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Included with the 363 pp. report are 10 attractive chromolithographs by Gustavus Sohon and 4 folding maps including:

A. Map of Military Reconnaissance from Dalles, Oregon via Fort Wallah-Wallah, to Fort Taylor, Washington Territory... (21.2 x 35.4")

B. Map of Military Reconnaissance from Fort Taylor to the Coeur d'Alene Mission, Washington Territory...(21.7 x 20.4")

C. Map of the Mountain Section of the Ft. Walla Walla & Ft. Benton Military Wagon Road from Coeur d'Alene Lake to the Dearborn River Washington Territory (21.2 x 49.5")

D. Map of Military Road from Fort Walla Walla on the Columbia to Fort Benton on the Missouri (17.5 x 33.7")

Octavo, rebound in half calf with tan cloth over boards.

Condition: B

The maps have light toning along the folds, numerous short splits at fold intersections, and archival tape on verso to reinforce and repair numerous fold separations. Text and plates are in near fine condition.
